Deleting Computer History is one of the many steps that have to be taken by computer users to make sure their data does not reach the wrong hands. The data available on a computer can be incriminating evidence against a person in a court of law, many people have suffered the consequences of not deleting their computer history data soon enough and getting caught in things that they have no association with, many a times a computer can be hacked and used by the people around you without your knowledge, and in these circumstances, if you fail to delete the data accessed by them in that session, you could be held responsible for the data on that computer. It is not only the Internet files and history that is of importance to delete but also the files stored in the “index.dat” file on a windows machine, this is because, the “index.dat” file stores the information about all the files and directories you accessed and also the information about the different programs that you executed on your computer.

Unfortunately, many people postpone and relax when it comes to deleting personal history on their computer. Leaving traces of private data on your computer without proper protection and care can sometimes cause huge damages, we have time and again seen many big banking frauds occur due to the negligence of the computer users, the past documents accessed by you can give a lot more information that you imagined is possible. The computer history has to be cleared regularly to avoid the hiccups in computer software and thus stay safe from intruders and people who are after the digital data you possess.

If you are using a computer that is shared or public, it becomes paramount that you delete the history every time you finish a session, this gives you complete immunity to data theft and also ensures that your data remains yours. Hidden files are another area that has to be rectified carefully, the hidden files are not hidden from everything, for instance, it takes about a few clicks to view all the hidden files in a windows machine, thus compromising your security and privacy to a large extent.

The best way to maintain proper security in your own computer is to regularly delete computer history stored in it, you can either do it manually or use software that can do the job for you. Since your computer maintains an index of everything you do on the computer, it is prudent that you delete this “virtual diary” that has propped up without your permission. Your footprints can land you in trouble even if you have not been doing anything illegal, the world of computers is complex and thus there are lots of things that can be considered illegal that could very well sound more than legal. Therefore, the safest bet is to regularly clean all the computer’s private and personal history.

Most of us do not do anything immoral or illegal with the use of the computer, but it does not mean we have to compromise on security and privacy, everyone has got the right to defend his/her information. It is of great value to delete all computer history when ever possible.

Storing internet history on your computer without deleting it for a long time can prove to be fatal, internet history can be dangerous if anyone other than you get access to it, and the easiest way of making sure that it does not happen is to delete the history. Many people who use the internet forget that all the usage patterns and the websites you visited get logged and saved as internet history files, it even stores the information about the images and videos that you might have seen on the internet. This log of private data is not desirable to be in someone else’s hand.

Internet history eraser is a software that erases the internet history from your computer completely, although there are many ways to delete the internet history manually, it has been proved that most of those method are inadequate and do not erase the data and information completely, this can be very dangerous as the data can be retrieved and the person can still lose his/her privacy and right to secrecy. Internet history eraser erases all the files from the computer completely; it makes sure that the data is completely erased leaving no traces behind.

Internet history eraser software is one of kind software that uses modern technology to its utmost use. Internet history eraser is compatible with many of the browsers that are available in the market today. It searches for the history documents and completely deletes them all. Most of the browsers store that internet history files in hidden files and folders, this software searches for the files and folders and deletes them all. It even searches for those files that are not marked as history files but contain internet history information.

Different browsers have different ways to store the hidden files, with the invention of embedding the search tab inside the browser window itself, it has become prudent that the search terms and associated data is stored somewhere in the local computer, these files are stored separately from the other history files. These data can be crucial as it can reveal a lot of information if it falls into the wrong hands. The internet history remover software finds such index files that store the search terms and delete it completely.

Many users fail to recognize the importance of deleting the internet history data. Most importantly, many people fail to recognize that data once deleted is not completely deleted and it leaves certain traces that can be used to get back the data. This is the main reason why so many people are convicted every year for the data found on their computer that pertains to illegal websites and services, sometimes you might have opened a website just by accident or it could have been a pop up, but the history would still show that you had visited the site. This kind of inaccuracies does not only bring in wasteful data and clog your system but also gets you into trouble.

Normally, Internet users who regularly visit specific websites for some purpose or the other need to manually enter the login and password data each time they wish to open the site. However, this is no longer required as the present day Web browsers save the login and password data that a user has manually typed in the website forms and they robotically emerge in the proper boxes when they visit the sites again. Apparently, this is a great advantage for the Internet surfers who do not require memorizing the logins and passwords and entering them manually in the appropriate boxes each time they visit the ‘favorite’ websites.

Passwords may be used for specific procedures like preventing reading, accessing or modifying any particular file. Every one of us has used the feature at some point and it may be said without any doubt that passwords are a wonderful means to have at your disposal to protect the privacy of your work.

Nevertheless, since these cached passwords are saved in the hard drive of the user’s computer, anyone with expertise in computer technology may perhaps access them posing a hazard to your privacy. In other words, these people may potentially use the stored password to the related websites or use specific software to acquire it. However, this should not pose a big problem for the Internet users as they may erase the cached passwords manually or with the help of any effective history eraser software.

Internet Explorer 7.0

Erasing stored passwords Manually is a simple endeavor and you can do it often to free some space on your computer hard drive. In the event of using the Internet Explorer 7.0 version, you may manually erase the passwords by following the steps mentioned below:

Go to the ‘Tools’ menu at the top of your IE browser and click on it.

In the ‘Tools Menu’ you will find ‘Internet Options’, hit on the tab.

Next, click on the ‘General’ button.

This will display a number of options. You need to go to the ‘Browsing History’ part and hit on the ‘Delete’ tab.

This will open the ‘Delete Browsing History’ window. Here you need to click on the ‘Delete Password’ tab.

Next, hit on the ‘Yes’ button.

Finally, to end the procedure, you need to click on the ‘Close’ tab and then on the ‘OK’ button.

Erase Stored Passwords in Internet Explorer 5.x/ 6.x

If you are using IE 5.x or 6.x, you should follow the following steps:

Select the ‘Tools’ menu at the top of your Web browser.

This will open up a number of options, click on the ‘Internet Options’ tab.

When searching from popular search engines like Google, Yahoo or Live Search you would have surely noticed that the moment you click on text box to type something a list of ALL your past searches just pops up.

You may have just ignored it or sometimes simply glanced through it not giving it another thought not realizing how potentially dangerous it can prove to be.

Here are top five reasons why you must regularly Erase internet history
.

1) To Avoid Random Strangers From Seeing What You Search

Because our laptops or PCs are only with us most of the times we tend to think no one else accesses it. That is far from the truth. Our computers are sent out for servicing ever so often and office-workers will be all too familiar with calling tech support for technical issues. We can never completely monitor the activities of servicing personnel. Search box is only a click away for these random strangers to view what you search.

2) To Clean Records of Other People’s Searches on Your Computer

Almost all of us have the moment where we start to type something in the search box and it pops up a term that we supposedly searched but have no memory of searching. It could be very likely that that term was searched by your teenaged nephew who borrowed your laptop last week. And things that teenagers search are not always, well, “clean”. Do you want your co-workers (or even the tech support guys mentioned in #5 above) thinking that you searched such a thing?
Don’t take the fall for other people’s nasty searches on your computer, clear your search history instead.

3) To Avoid Embarrassing Situations

Picture this: you google up your ex one day, just out of curiosity; next day your partner opens Google and behold what comes up in the search history. Heart breaking and unnecessary. Similarly, you don’t want your boss finding out about your job searches, do you?

4) To Keep Nasty Viruses at Bay

Internet worms of all kinds are being written by malicious coders. Many of these worms are capable of copying your entire search history to their servers. While it is always recommended that you use security measures to keep such worms at bay, it is always a safer deal to not have search history in the first place then to risk such a breach of privacy.

5) Because Some Searches Are Meant to be Private

We are all humans and have our own personal needs, wants, curiosities and fantasies that we are not comfortable sharing with anyone. There are adults who still follow Disney cartoons, there are people with alternate sexualities, there are times when you are too drunk to know what you are searching. You have all the right to search whatever you want, but no one has any right to know it without your permission.
Exercise your right to privacy. Erase your search history.

There are dozens of places and locations where the history of your internet activity is stored. In this article we try to give you an idea of this puzzling maze and show you the best ways to clear your internet history.

Form Data – For Search Terms, Frequently used form data, etc

A record of all the search terms that you use in popular search engines like Yahoo, Google, Windows Live Search, etc is stored in your browsers. Also, commo information that you fill in online forms like your Name, Birth Date, Address, Credit card numbers, etc are stored by your internet browser. You can clear this by the “Clear Form Data” option in the Settings/Preferences/Internet Options menu (it could be either of these depending on which browser you use.)

Temporary Internet Files

The Temporary Internet Files folder in your Windows folder contains a record of internet websites that you visited. It is a good idea to delete the entire Temporary Internet Files folder.

History Folder

The “History Folder” in your Windows directory contains a detailed history of all the websites that you visit. This folder should be regularly deleted to ensure privacy and safety for you.

Clearing Cookies

Third party websites, including big name sites like Ebay and Yahoo insert cookies on your computer which track the websites that you visit. This information is then used by the websites to serve you ads, to sell you items, etc.

Always use the “Clear Cookies” option on your browser to remove these tracker cookies.
This was the easy part, unfortunately there are many more nasty “undeletable” things which are not so easy to remove. To cite a few:

INDEX.DAT File

This file records practically your every move on the internet. This includes websites you visit, search queries, etc and deleting the Temporary Internet Files or clearing Form Data does not mean that that data is cleared from INDEX.DAT also.
It is virtually impossible for normal users to delete INDEX.DAT because it is always in use by Explorer and hence “locked for editing”.

Non Standard Tracking Folders

Apart from the easily recognizable folder names like “Temporary Internet Files” or “Temp” folders , many notorious applications store internet history in obscure locations that are unknowing to the computer users.

THE SOLUTION

Don’t be discouraged by what you just read thinking that you will never be able to surf in privacy, there are several top class applications available out there which are able to clear even the “undeletables” mentioned above. These softwares are made by world class experts and it will ensure safety & security for you so you can surf the internet in peace.

Google is the best search engine out these providing the most accurate and relevant results to searches. That is the reason why Google has remained the #1 search engine since the past several years.

It is, however, quite possible that due to default settings or otherwise, your Google activities may be being recorded.

In this tutorial, we are going to give some simply steps using which you can completely delete your history in various Google avenues.

Erasing the history of searched terms from Google Homepage

On visiting the Google Homepage (Google.com) and clicking upon the search box, a list of previously searched terms are displayed. Depending on the browser that you use, the following steps may be followed to clear that search-box history list.

For Microsoft Internet Explorer Users:

Step 1) Click on “Tools” menu. (Alt + T)

Step 2) Click on “Internet Options”.

Step 3) Go to the “General” tab.

Step 4) Under the section “Browsing History”, click on “Delete”.

Step 5) Click on “Delete Forms”.

For Mozilla Firefox Users:

Step 1) Click on “Tools” menu. (Alt + T)

Step 2) Click on “Options”.

Step 3) Go to the “Privacy” tab.

Step 4) Under the section “Private Data”, click on “Clear Now”.

Step 5) Check “Saved Form and Search History”.

Step 6) Click on “Clear Private Data Now”

Clearing search history from the text box on Google Toolbar

Similar to the Google Home Page, the history of searches performed via Google Toolbar are also logged. To clear Google toolbar history, follow the steps given below:

Step 1) Click on the Dropdown button on the Toolbar

Step 2) Click the last option which says “Clear Search History”

Clearing Search History From ‘Google Search History’

If you are a member of any google service like GMail, Orkut, etc, you may have opted for a google account with “Google Search History” enabled.

Google Search History is like the Search History we have been talking about in this article, only this time it is online instead of being on your computer.

Thus, even if you follow the procedures outlined above to delete search history from your local computer it will still be maintained online. In order to delete the online history, follow these instructions:

Step 1) Log in to Google via your Google Account.

Step 2) Click on “Search History” on the Google home page or visit http://www.google.com/psearch

Step 3) Click on “Remove items” on the sidebar.

Step 4) Click on “Clear Entire Web History” which is located at the top bar.

Step 5) On the next page, click on “Clear History” button.

These are some of the ways in which your google search history can be cleared. Remember this is only one aspect of preventing intrusion of privacy. It is always an advisable task to use specialist softwares which are made specifically for the purpose of privacy protection.

If you are you concerned that your Web browser is loading at a snail’s pace or if you need to make space for new data on the hard drive, you should erase the temporary Internet files (TIF) stored in your computer. In fact, it is very simple to erase temporary Internet files, also known as browser cache, from the hard drive and would need to do this quite often. In fact, the process can be handled manually and also through software.

What Temporary Internet Files are

Here we will describe the steps regarding how to wipe out the temporary Internet files from your hard drive manually. But before we do that, it is essential to know what they actually are and how they are stored on your computer without your knowledge. Browser cache or temporary Internet files are actually files such as Web pages, graphics and cookies that are stored up in your hard drive to enhance the surfing speed. The design behind this is that if you surf to Yahoo.com, your Web browser will take specific files from this site and store them on your computer’s hard drive so that the next time you surf Yahoo.com the page should load sooner as you already have some pages from the site stored in your computer as temporary Internet files. This is because the Web browser doesn’t have to download the pages from the Web each time.

How TIF are stored

In the instance that your XP login user name is ‘MyUser’, all temporary Internet files or browser cache will be stored up in a specific sub-directory in your ‘Documents and Settings/My User/Local Settings’ directory known as the ‘Temporary Internet Files’. It must be mentioned here that since the ‘Temporary Internet Files’ directory is not a usual directory, the information in it cannot be read by using a DIR command. The Internet Explorer creates sub-directories with random letter/ number combinations to keep track of the information in the ‘Temporary Internet Files’ directory. When the user opens the Windows Internet Explorer it seems that there is just one directory of temporary Internet files as an index.dat file maintains the records of all the sub-directories.

How to erase TIF manually

1. Internet Explorer 7.0

Click on the ‘Tools’ menu tab at the top of your IE 7.0 browser.

This will open up the ‘Internet Options’ tab, click on it.

Clicking on the ‘Internet Options’ will show you a box with different settings.

Select the ‘General’ button in the box to open it.

Next, you will be lead into the ‘Browsing History’ window and click on the ‘Delete’ tab there.

In the ‘Delete Browsing History’ area, click on ‘Delete Files’ button.

Finally, select the ‘Yes’ option and click on the ‘Close’ tab to end the processes.

2. Internet Explorer 5.x/ 6.x

Select the ‘Tools’ menu tab that will open a number of options.

Next, click on the ‘Internet Options’ in the ‘Tools’ menu.

In the ‘Internet Options’, click on the ‘General’ button.

This will open up the ‘Temporary Internet Files’ part where you select the ‘Delete Files’ option.

Subsequently, click the ‘OK’ tab on the ‘Delete Files’ dialog box.

Finally, again click on the ‘OK’ button to end the procedure.

3. Internet Explorer 8.0
If you are using IE 8.0 you will find the ‘Tools’ menu just under the location bar to the right. Follow the same procedure as in the case of IE 7.0.

Wrapping Up

The other way to erase the temporary Internet files manually is to decide to delete one thing at a time to avoid wiping out all your passwords and the login data. In this case, just click on the ‘Delete’ tab every time and all the TIF are wiped out from your hard drive leaving the passwords and login data in tact. This process is also helpful in the event you feel that viruses have accumulated in your temporary Internet files or your add-ons have been taken over.

In addition, please note that even if you delete the temporary Internet files manually in Internet Explorer, the index.dat file accumulates data that will display the sites you have surfed before. It is impossible to manually remove the index.dat file as it is being used by the Windows continually.

The Internet Explorer uses three index.dat files that are basically system files and can under no circumstance be manually erased from the hard drive. The reason behind this is that these index.dat files are constantly used by the Windows and they will carry on accumulating data regarding the websites surfed by the user, pictures and videos downloaded or the cookies that have been saved irrespective of obliterating the browser history, temporary Internet files or browser cache and cookies from the computer. The content of the index.dat files can only be erased using any history eraser software.

The index.dat files have the potential to pile up information up to 100 megabytes and they need constant access to the CPU and bandwidth. Although Microsoft asserts that the index.dat files were initially intended to augment the Internet speed by taking off a server, they actually do the reverse as these large files are a continuous documentation of the user’s Internet browsing history.

Different Index.dat files

The three index.dat files used by the Internet Explorer include history index.dat file, cookies index.dat file, cache index.dat file. This means that each of Internet Explorer’s primary folders or directories – cache, cookies and history – uses an indexing technique to preserve data. In essence, a copy of the contents of the folders remains in that folder.
These files are useful as they speed up the hard drive while re-accessing websites that have been visited earlier. Nevertheless, the index.dat files invade the privacy of the Internet user as any person acquainted with these files and is able to access your computer is able to track your Web surfing history.

For cookies and for cache, the index.dat files are fundamentally URL entries and pointers to the related real files. For history, no files are referenced as this is the collection of URL records applied for AutoComplete and for regulating the prominence of hidden links on the Web pages. All the three forms of index.dat files include the actual URL and also the date/ time stamps and reference counts.

Where to locate Index.dat files

Although it is impossible to manually erase the index.dat files, if you want to locate them you will find them on the places. If you are using a Windows 9x computer the index.dat files are located in the following locations:
WINDOWSCookiesindex.dat
WINDOWSHistoryindex.dat
WINDOWSTemporary Internet Filesindex.dat
WINDOWSCookiesindex.dat
WINDOWSHistoryindex.dat
WINDOWSTemporary Internet Filesindex.dat.

On the other hand, if you are using a Windows 2000 and Windows XP you may find numerous index.dat files at the following places:
Documents and Settings<Username>Cookiesindex.dat
Documents and Settings<Username>Local SettingsHistoryHistory.IE5index.dat
Documents and Settings<Username>Local
SettingsHistoryHistory.IE5************index.dat
Documents and Settings<Username>Local
Internet FilesContent.IE5index.dat

Viewing Index.dat files

In fact, the index.dat files are concealed by default and they may be seen by enabling the Internet Explorer to view the hidden. The rationale behind that these files not being visible are that they are not simply hidden, but also have been selected as “system” files. System files and folders are dealt with in a different way in DOS and Windows and are efficiently shrouded from offhand searches. In order to make the index.dat files visible, you need to follow this simple manual procedure.

Click on the ‘Start’ tab at the left-hand corner of Windows.

Open the ‘Settings’ box and click on the ‘Control Panel’ tab.

Here you will find the ‘Folder Options’ window. Click on the ‘View’ folder in this window.

Next, click on the ‘Files and Folders’ in the ‘Advanced Settings’ area.

Now, select the ‘Display the Content of System Folders’ to open the ‘Hidden Files and Folders’.

To end the process, click on the ‘OK’ button.

Wrapping Up

It may be mentioned here that barring index.dat cookies and history, all records of the user’s Internet surfing history are present as temporary Internet files like caches, recent documents list, AutoComplete, dropdown URL list from the Internet Explorer and the like. However there is one way to delete the index.dat file and all it data. For this you are going to need special software. For recommendation of this type of software read our Privacy Software Reviews here.
