Form Data – For Search Terms, Frequently used form data, etc

A record of all the search terms that you use in popular search engines like Yahoo, Google, Windows Live Search, etc is stored in your browsers.  Also, commo information that you fill in online forms like your Name, Birth Date, Address, Credit card numbers, etc are stored by your internet browser. Temporary Internet Files

The Temporary Internet Files folder in your Windows folder contains a record of internet websites that you visited. It is a good idea to delete the entire Temporary Internet Files folder.

History Folder

The “History Folder” in your Windows directory contains a detailed history of all the websites that you visit. This folder should be regularly deleted to ensure privacy and safety for you.

Clearing Cookies

What Temporary Internet Files are

Here we will describe the steps regarding how to wipe out the temporary Internet files from your hard drive manually. But before we do that, it is essential to know what they actually are and how they are stored on your computer without your knowledge. Browser cache or temporary Internet files are actually files such as Web pages, graphics and cookies that are stored up in your hard drive to enhance the surfing speed. The design behind this is that if you surf to Yahoo.com, your Web browser will take specific files from this site and store them on your computer’s hard drive so that the next time you surf Yahoo.com the page should load sooner as you already have some pages from the site stored in your computer as temporary Internet files. This is because the Web browser doesn’t have to download the pages from the Web each time.

How TIF are stored

In the instance that your XP login user name is ‘MyUser’, all temporary Internet files or browser cache will be stored up in a specific sub-directory in your ‘Documents and Settings/My User/Local Settings’ directory known as the ‘Temporary Internet Files’. It must be mentioned here that since the ‘Temporary Internet Files’ directory is not a usual directory, the information in it cannot be read by using a DIR command. The Internet Explorer creates sub-directories with random letter/ number combinations to keep track of the information in the ‘Temporary Internet Files’ directory. When the user opens the Windows Internet Explorer it seems that there is just one directory of temporary Internet files as an index.dat file maintains the records of all the sub-directories.

How to erase TIF manually

1. Internet Explorer 7.0

• Click on the ‘Tools’ menu tab at the top of your IE 7.0 browser.
• This will open up the ‘Internet Options’ tab, click on it.
• Clicking on the ‘Internet Options’ will show you a box with different settings.
• Select the ‘General’ button in the box to open it.
• Next, you will be lead into the ‘Browsing History’ window and click on the ‘Delete’ tab there.
• In the ‘Delete Browsing History’ area, click on ‘Delete Files’ button.
• Finally, select the ‘Yes’ option and click on the ‘Close’ tab to end the processes.

2. Internet Explorer 5.x/ 6.x

• Select the ‘Tools’ menu tab that will open a number of options.
• Next, click on the ‘Internet Options’ in the ‘Tools’ menu.
• In the ‘Internet Options’, click on the ‘General’ button.
• This will open up the ‘Temporary Internet Files’ part where you select the ‘Delete Files’ option.
• Subsequently, click the ‘OK’ tab on the ‘Delete Files’ dialog box.
• Finally, again click on the ‘OK’ button to end the procedure.

3. Internet Explorer 8.0
If you are using IE 8.0 you will find the ‘Tools’ menu just under the location bar to the right. Follow the same procedure as in the case of IE 7.0.

Wrapping Up

The other way to erase the temporary Internet files manually is to decide to delete one thing at a time to avoid wiping out all your passwords and the login data. In this case, just click on the ‘Delete’ tab every time and all the TIF are wiped out from your hard drive leaving the passwords and login data in tact. This process is also helpful in the event you feel that viruses have accumulated in your temporary Internet files or your add-ons have been taken over.

In addition, please note that even if you delete the temporary Internet files manually in Internet Explorer, the index.dat file accumulates data that will display the sites you have surfed before. It is impossible to manually remove the index.dat file as it is being used by the Windows continually.

The three index.dat files used by the Internet Explorer include history index.dat file, cookies index.dat file, cache index.dat file. In essence, a copy of the contents of the folders remains in that folder.
These files are useful as they speed up the hard drive while re-accessing websites that have been visited earlier. For cookies and for cache, the index.dat files are fundamentally URL entries and pointers to the related real files. In fact, the index.dat files are concealed by default and they may be seen by enabling the Internet Explorer to view the hidden. The rationale behind that these files not being visible are that they are not simply hidden, but also have been selected as “system” files. System files and folders are dealt with in a different way in DOS and Windows and are efficiently shrouded from offhand searches. In order to make the index.dat files visible, you need to follow this simple manual procedure.
